Frederick Rowland

Quote from producer/director Jibril Haynes
Frederick Rowland stars as Nicola Tesla in cinematographer Joey Kolbe's "Light And Power", filming in the summer of 2008.

In the poignant and passionate role of Nicola Tesla in "Light And Power", cinematographer Joey Kolbe's pilot short of the visionary scientist and inventor considered a madman by many in his own time, but hailed today as "the father of the 20th century," Frederick Rowland's well-honed dramatic talents are sensitively tuned to the external trials and internal turbulence experienced by his character, and he infuses the role with a heartbreaking reality destined to touch today's audiences.

Yet in the quick flash of a wry smile, this exceptionally versatile actor can move semblance and spirit from dark to light, tapping into his intuitive sense of the ludicrous and profound understanding of comedy to deliver a sly and off-beat turn as a world-weary vampire or a deliciously outrageous performance as a shady insurance attorney.

Brought in at the eleventh hour to play a judge in Jibril Haynes' multi-textured film comedy "Kwanzaa With The Jonses's", Mr. Rowland was immediately recast in the larger role of a thoroughly corrupt insurance lawyer when it became clear that his comedic gifts were too good to go unexploited.

It speaks to his preparedness as a player and his abilities as a quick study that despite the lack of a moment in which to learn his lines, or even rehearse, with little more than a cold reading he delivered a comically class act portrayal of a decidedly sleazy character.

With a natural instinct and disciplined talent for both understanding and accessing the full spectrum of emotive and reactive elements resident in the characters he plays, he ably embraces, absorbs, and conveys their strengths and subtleties, employing his skills to great effect.

Delighting audiences and impressing directors in roles that have ranged from the heartbreaking to the hilarious, Mr. Rowland brings to the performance table years of solid training and experience, a quick and creative mind, a steadfast work ethic, and a cooperative attitude that bespeaks his onstage generosity to his fellow actors.

Inspired early and taught by a topflight professional, his ability to bring theater-goers to laughter and tears is the result of effort and dedication that bear fruit with each performance.

In every production and set of circumstances, whether called upon to continually improvise new bits of business for his character, or follow to the letter the highly specific instructions of a detail-focused director, Mr. Rowland proves himself ready and able to deliver the goods.

In addition to his well-honed talents as an actor, his experience and abilities as a musician, poet, and classical guitarist and composer have more than once assisted a production, even to being asked to write and perform his own music in a production of “Much Ado About Nothing.”

In an unusual turn that adds to the polymath mix, this Connecticut native, who hails from an old New England family that first arrived in the New World in the 1600s, is also a trained physicist who views obstacles through the analytical eyes of a mathematician, and approaches them with the cool reasoning of a problem-solver.

With all this as his background, it’s no surprise that Mr. Rowland infuses every performance with a combination of well-disciplined skill and unbounded creative passion that has won the enthusiastic applause of Connecticut audiences. In his ongoing journey as an actor he continues to seek out new roles, new challenges, and the incalculable possibilities of the yet undiscovered.
